Outpatient
Drug addiction and alcoholism are very serious
illnesses and require dedication and commitment in order to
be overcome. There are many different treatment options including
intensive inpatient, outpatient, sober living and special
needs treatment programs. Outpatient treatment programs are
designed in such a way that people can find recovery from
drug addiction and alcoholism but they can also tend to daily
life activities such as jobs and family.
Outpatient treatment, also called day treatment,
is a part-time stay in a structured environment, usually for
a few hours everyday. The structure provided in outpatient
treatment teaches patients how to live sober in the real world
and also stay accountable for other responsibilities. Outpatient
programs emphasize creating a strong support system within
a sober community and suggest that patients offer each other
help and hope when it is called for.
Individual and group counseling sessions are
also an essential part of outpatient treatment because they
provide time during which a patient is able to express concerns,
fears and other stressful feelings. Individual counseling
helps patients get honest with themselves and talk about painful
experiences from the past. Group counseling is a tool that
helps improve patients’ social skills and it also helps
them to stay accountable to each other.
Writing assignments as well as spiritual and
emotional exercises are also used to help outpatient clients.
Outpatient programs use the principles of the 12-step programs
to help solidify the beginning of the recovery process. The
12-steps are used as guidelines because they have helped many
people get and stay sober. Because outpatient treatment means
patients have access to the ‘real world’ on a
daily basis, using 12-step meetings and fellowships to aid
recovery is essential for a smooth transition into life after
treatment.
Drug addiction and alcoholism do not discriminate
and they affect people of all ages and backgrounds. Many people
stay so deep in denial that they are never able to admit they
have a problem, thus never getting help or treatment. Outpatient
treatment offers a middle ground in which a person is able
to get help but also continue on with daily life. In some
cases outpatient treatment programs are offered by employers
to employees that are hard workers but have a drug or alcohol problem. Instead of being fired, outpatient treatment is one
solution for the problem.
