Detox
The detoxification process is the first crucial
step on the path towards recovery. The body of a person addicted
to alcohol or drugs is physically sick, just as the mind has
become mentally ill. In order for the mind to be clear to
learn new attitudes and outlooks in recovery, the body must
first be cleansed of the toxins and chemicals weighing down
the addict’s internal systems.
It is possible to go through a detox in a non-medical
environment however we do not suggest this route because it
can be dangerous and unpredictable. It is hazardous because
a using addict trying to become sober does not usually think
or act rationally while detoxing. Instead of having the temptation
of using, because the pain of withdrawal is too much, a detox
performed in a medical facility is much more advisable.
The detoxing person will go through withdrawal,
meaning the body will have the physical craving for more of
the drug. The mental and physical obsession of the patient
can be severe and last for up to a week. In a medical facility
the physical pain can be dealt with by medical professionals
so that the addict does not have to suffer so much. Because
each drug addiction and each individual differs, the detoxification
process for each person will also differ. The medical environment
provides constant supervision and also has the capacity to
deal with complications and problems that may occur during
the detox.
Once the detox is completed the person is now
considered ‘dry”. Being dry means the person is
off addictive substances in the physical sense, but has not
had any other type of treatment to ensure longer-term recovery.
While the Affordable Treatment Program and Gulf Coast Recovery do not directly offer detoxification services, we do have
connections and co-provider relations with existing detox
facilities in the area. After the detox process our staff
transports patients from the medical environment into the
safe treatment environment at Gulf Coast. Our treatment program
provides comprehensive plans that take into consideration
the needs of each individual. The detox is the initial step
in the recovery process.
