Alternatives
Once a person gets caught in the cycle of addiction,
it is very difficult for the process to be broken without
the help of intensive inpatient treatment. Depending on the
length and frequency of use, a person with a drug or alcohol problem is probably suffering from enormous amounts of denial,
as well as feelings that have not been expressed in a very
long time. For these people, inpatient treatment is the safest
and most effective treatment option.
In other cases the need for round the clock supervision
is not necessarily needed. Instead these people are able to
function in daily life, but they struggle with knowing how
to stay away from drugs and alcohol. For people such as these,
finding alternatives for intensive long-term treatment may
be advisable. Alternatives for inpatient treatment include:
outpatient or day treatment, sober living environments, halfway
houses and weekly therapy sessions. These types of treatments
can be supplemented with the use of 12-step support groups
and meetings.
These alternative modes of treatment are also
suggested if a person has gone through inpatient treatment
but is still feeling unsure in early recovery. In some cases,
these methods can be even more cost-effective than even affordable
treatment programs.
Outpatient treatment can range anywhere from
a few weeks to longer programs of several months. Patients
are required to attend treatment either during the day or
night, for a certain number of hours each week. During this
time the patients will attend group and individual counseling
sessions as well as workshops on topics such as ‘triggers
for use’ and ‘relapse prevention’.
Sober living environments can be found all over
the country and are an environment which has the main requirement
of sobriety from each house member. Sober livings, as well
as halfway houses, give recovering addicts the freedom to
do daily life, but also provide the structure and resources
necessary in early recovery. These types of environments are
seen as a safety net through which it is harder to slip.
Alternatives can be just as effective as intensive
inpatient treatment and finding the right type of treatment
makes all the difference. If you or someone you love needs
affordable treatment but aren’t quite sure where to
look, contact Gulf Coast Recovery and we will try our best
to refer you to a suitable program that meets your needs.
Recovery is just a phone call away.
